Collagen Has A Natural Ability To Fight Infection

Collagen, one of the body's key natural resources, is a building block of skin tissue and can benefit all stages of wound healing. Closure may occur when collagen is available to the wound bed. Wound deterioration and sometimes surgery such as amputation can thus be avoided.
Collagen is a natural product and as such is used as a natural wound dressing and has properties not found in artificial wound dressings. It is resistant to bacteria, which is crucial in wound dressings. It helps keep wounds sterile due to its natural ability to fight infection. When collagen is used as a burn dressing, healthy granulation tissue is able to form rapidly during the burn process, helping it to heal quickly.
Collagen has the following functions in wound healing in each of the four stages of wound healing:
Guidance function: Collagen fibers can guide fibroblasts. Fibroblasts migrate along the connective tissue matrix.
Chemotactic properties: The large surface area available on collagen fibers attracts fibrotic cells and thus aids in healing.
Nucleation: Collagen can act as a nucleating agent in the presence of certain neutral salt molecules, resulting in the formation of fibrous structures. Collagen wound dressings may direct new collagen deposition and capillary growth.
Hemostatic Properties: Platelets interact with collagen to form a hemostatic plug.
