Many different types of anti-obesity medicines have been tested in clinical trials, but the only ones that have proved to be safe and effective for use on the NHS for weight management are orlistat, liraglutide and semaglutide. Never take an anti-obesity medicine if it has not been prescribed to you.

A: Some weight-loss supplements have been found to have ingredients that aren't listed on the label, such as prescription medicines. Other safety issues may include having an allergy to something in the supplement and interactions with other medicines you take.

A: In addition to diet and exercise, your doctor may prescribe medications to assist you in losing weight. Weight loss medications can help reduce your appetite, allow your body to absorb fewer nutrients, and increase fat burning.

A: The only over-the-counter weight-loss product approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is orlistat (Alli). It is half as strong as prescription orlistat (Xenical). It blocks the body from taking in some of the fat from foods you eat. Many other over-the-counter products claim to help with weight loss.

A: Studies have shown that gaining weight on the pill is unlikely and although some women do put on weight while taking the pill, the reverse is also true for others . In some cases, women actually lose weight when taking hormonal birth control pills.

A: Some popular weight-loss pills are Contrave (naltrexone / bupropion), Qsymia (phentermine / topiramate ER), and phentermine (Adipex-P). Some clinical studies suggest that Qsymia is the most effective weight loss pill.

A: Additionally, improving dietary choices, increasing physical activity, getting more sleep, managing stress levels effectively, quitting smoking, and limiting alcohol are all ways to decrease and avoid hormonal weight gain.

A: The FDA has approved six of these drugs—orlistat (Xenical, Alli), phentermine-topiramate (Qsymia), naltrexone-bupropion (Contrave), liraglutide (Saxenda), semaglutide (Wegovy), and tirzepatide (Zepbound)—for long-term use. Four of these drugs are approved for adults and children ages 12 and older.
